Sand off any areas on your awning that are flaky or feel rough to the touch after the awning is completely dry.

To do this the best tool you can use is a pressure washer.
Sand the awning until the metal is shiny and smooth.
Hold your spray can paint about 10 to 14 inches from the awning.
Let the paint dry for the stipulated time before you apply another coat.
When the awning is taken down it can be laid on the ground or another flat surface.
However these often contain ammonia.
Prepare to repaint old aluminum awnings that no longer look nice even after they were rinsed and washed.
Unfortunately aluminum and ammonia have a chemical reaction which is corrosive to the metal.
To prep metal for paint adhesion you must first clean it with soap and water remove light rust with a wire brush sand it with fine grain sandpaper and then in most cases prime.
This will be very effective at removing any and all substances stuck to the metal.
Apply an oil based primer many people get a latex primer because it dries faster.
If will cause some white flaking to appear and gas.
Brush off any remaining debris from the sanding.

Spray the awning with a thin coat of paint in long even strokes.
